A duo performance weaving everyday objects, motors, and handmade sound sculptures into improvised exchange.
Rie Nakajima is a London-based sculptor who creates sounds using motorised devices and everyday objects within installations and performances. Her work sits on the borderline of sculpture and music, with improvisation at its heart. Her first major solo exhibition was held at IKON Gallery, Birmingham, in 2018, and she has presented work at Museo Vostell Malpartida, Annely Juda Gallery, STUK, ShugoArts, Donaueschinger Musiktage, and Cafe OTO. She is a member of O YAMA O and collaborates frequently with Pierre Berthet, Angharad Davies, David Cunningham, Max Eastley, David Toop, and Akira Sakata.
Pierre Berthet lives in Belgium, having studied percussion, composition with Frederic Rzewski, improvisation with Garrett List, and theory with Henri Pousseur. For thirty years he has built and presented sculptural sound objects and installations — using steel, plastic, water, motors, and vacuum cleaners — across music venues, festivals, and galleries, with longtime collaborators including Frederic Le Junter and Arnold Dreyblatt.
