Two virtuosic vocal performers exploring the voice as an instrument, ranging from extended improvisation to jazz and Scottish traditional song
Phil Minton has spent over forty years as an improvising singer in groups, orchestras, and ensembles worldwide, known for his extended vocal techniques. After early work with the Mike Westbrook Band, he formed an ongoing quartet with Veryan Weston, Roger Turner and John Butcher, with continuing duos with each and a longstanding partnership with Audrey Chen. His Feral Choir, in which he voice-conducts workshops and concerts open to anyone who wants to sing, has performed in over twenty countries.
Maggie Nicols, Scottish-born avant-garde vocalist, has been central to European improvised music since the late 1960s, when she joined John Stevens's Spontaneous Music Ensemble. A committed feminist, she co-founded the Feminist Improvising Group and the Contradictions workshop, and has long collaborated in the trio Les Diaboliques and with drummer Ken Hyder.
