Embodied Stories Workshop

A workshop in physical storytelling and textless theatre

2:00pm ‐ 5:00pm
Summerhall
Summerhall, Edinburgh, EH9 1PL

Information

Co-creators Jon Lachlan Stewart and Marie-Hélène Bélanger of La Fille Du Laitier’s production “Macbeth Muet” refined the physical work in the show over years of rehearsal, research and creation. In this workshop Jon will share their discoveries and working methods.

This workshop created for professional practitioners will help you develop physical techniques in object manipulation, rhythm, and deconstructing stories through textless interpretation.

Whatever your level of experience, this workshop aims to develop your confidence and versatility as a performer, through understanding your own body as an instrument for storytelling.

Through the exploration of different movement qualities and work with objects, puppets, and classical texts, participants will develop a deeper understanding of stage performance and physical storytelling by:

Interpreting a known classical story, like Macbeth or another classic!
Using music to understand the body as a rhythmic and narrative entity
Deconstructing classical texts to integrate them effectively into stage performance
Exploring stillness and minimalism as powerful tools on stage
Experimenting with objects and puppet interaction to enrich storytelling.
While participants will use objects and puppets during the workshop, no meaningful prior knowledge or facility with these techniques is necessary, just a sense of fun, curiosity and desire to explore your artistic practice.

The workshop will be facilitated by Jon Lachlan Stewart, co-creator of Macbeth Muet, and one of the original founding members of La Fille du Laitier.

Macbeth Muet will be performed at Assembly Roxy Theatre, Upstairs on 02 Jun 2026 at 19:30

This workshop is subsidised as part of the partnership between Manipulate Arts and Arts D&G
